Vintage Greeting Cards: Birthday

My mom had a box of greeting cards that, as a child, I loved looking at. Some were funny; some were saccharin sweet. Looking at them now, some are insensitive.

Today I’m going to upload the birthday cards.

A Birthday Greeting For Our Mother (American Greetings)

This is a saccharin sweet one. Reading it hurts my teeth a little. I really like the illustration though.

Birthday Greetings (card company not specified)

This one is not as pretty as the one above, but also not as sugary.

On Your Day, Mom (American Greetings)

This one is insensitive, I think. It’s obviously about someone from a rural area, possibly in the hills and/or South. Using the word “ain’t” and misspelling poem and sure continue the myth that those people are not smart.

On Your Birthday A Cup of Friendship (card company not specified)

This is sweet — not too sweet. I might actually use it someday.

Greetings on Your Birthday (card company not specified)

I like this one okay too. I will probably use it too.

From Both of Us, Mother, on Your Birthday (American Greetings)

This one is okay. I don’t like the illustration though.

Happy Birthday, Niece (American Greetings)

This one’s a hoot. I might send it to one of Dean’s nieces. I’m not sure my only actual niece would get the humor.

Wishing You Lots of Birthday Fun (card company not specified)

For Your Birthday (card company not specified)

This one is pretty and I will probably use it.

Mom and Dad’s Wedding Announcement

The editor must have been on vacation because 1) my dad did not actually take my mother’s last name and, 2) the word bride’ in the last sentence is missing an s after the apostrophe.

Patrick-Green Nuptials Read

The marriage of Miss Patricia Ann Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Green of 501 Raymond St., and Elvin M. Patrick, son of Mr. And Mrs. Frank Patrick of Hampshire, was solemnized Saturday afternoon, Sept. 4, at 4 o’clock in the First Methodist church at Hampshire, the Rev. Albert Ihne officiating.

The couple’s only attendants were Miss Barbara Grissom of Elgin and Donald Donahey of Gary Ind. A prelude of organ music was played by Mrs. Ihne. The bride was given away by her father. Guests witnessing the ceremony were members of the immediate family.

After a honeymoon at the Dells of Wisconsin Mr. and Mrs. Green will reside with the bride’ parents until their apartment is ready.

Mom’s Sewing Machine Instructions

My mom had an Elna sewing machine that ended up being sold at the estate sale. I kick myself for not taking this — even though our history was complicated. I don’t sew. I tried, I failed. I hated that sewing machine with a passion. On the other hand, it was a big part of my childhood — mom sewed often — my first pair of jeans, all of my middle school and high school dance dresses, a perfect gothic cloak for Clare.

It came in a green metal carrying case.

Dad bought the sewing machine for mom from Hall’s in Elgin. Hall’s no longer exists, but I think the building does.

Even though I don’t have the actual machine, I do have the instruction book. And honestly, just looking through the booklet stresses me out.
