Rescue Time – a nifty time management tool

I think I’ve mentioned before what a shareware/freeware addict I am. I think I called myself a betaholic. Sometimes it is a waste of time, other times it isn’t. For instance, I’ve been using a little program called Rescue Time for a little less than a week and I think it is going to save me time.

You install a small application that sits in your system tray and logs the programs on which you are actively working, then sends it to your online dashboard where your time is visually represented in a graph form. You can “tag” activities and the dashboard will display the tags as a graph as well.

Besides showing me where I was wasting time, this application is helping me keep track of my work hours. I’d been tracking my time with XNote Stopwatch, but often forgot to turn it on when I began working or forgot to pause it when I quit working. Then if the computer crashed or I forgot to save it, I’d lose my log of time. Now that I have tagged my applications and websites that I use exclusively for work as “work” I can get a pretty good idea how much time I spent actually working on tasks for my job.

Rescue Time is still in Beta and invitation only, but I got an invitation only a few days or so after signing up. I was worried that I’d discover that I wasted my time more than I do, so perhaps I am not such a slacker after all!

Ubuntu

I’ve wanted to try to install Linux on a computer for years – ever since a friend told me about it back in 1998 – just to say I did. I’ve never actually done it though. I played around with Ubuntu a few months ago, but couldn’t remember how to set up a computer to boot from a cd and didn’t want to risk damaging any data on either of my two working PCs.

Today I finally dragged out my old gateway and thought I’d give Ubuntu a go on that. I was able to download the image file from the Ubuntu site and burn it on a disk. I played with it a little on my laptop – just to see how it would work. I don’t think my dvd-rom is that good, however, because it seemed to go very slowly.

I just booted the old gateway computer with the Ubuntu CD (figured how to change the boot-order) and when it tried to install came up with several hundred error messages. I guess either the CD image didn’t burn correctly or else the computer is just too messed up. Pity. I really wanted to try it out.

Edited an hour later – it never worked on the old computer, but I am using the live session option with my laptop to write this. Got online and am exploring the operating system. I might just install it on my laptop if I can figure out how to partition the second drive.

Success!

It may not be a big deal to anyone but me and my family, but we now have a wireless printer for our laptops. I’ve spent  hours working on various configurations that never worked properly. Yesterday, however, after about 4 hours of fiddling and just when I decided it was not going to work, both my daughter’s and my laptops were able to print to our new wireless printer. Woo hoo!
